Hi from Limbo Land. This is possibly the final day when I can sit back and relax, secure in the knowledge that for a few more hours my memoir is not my responsibility. It is in fact with my editor, Lovely Lindsay, having its final proofread. She tells me it'll probably be returned to me sometime this weekend.
I feel blessed to have come into contact with Lindsay. She is one of the most positive people I've (never) met. Our contact has been entirely on-line, but nevertheless I have built up a very real bond with her. I am so lucky to have found a connection with the first editor I contacted. Granted, she was recommended to me, but because my book is so very personal it was vital to me to find a kindred spirit. In Lindsay I found just that.
Lindsay and I have exchanged family photos, which has given me a fair idea of what she looks like-young, pretty and smiley. However without doubt her most endearing feature is her kindness. And yes, she has done a pretty good job of editing too. For her part, she tells me it has been a joy to edit such a personal book, which I suppose must come as a nice change of pace from editing fiction.
My memoir will soon be entering the big bad world of readers and critics, and that journey scares me more than just a little. Will anyone buy it, and if so, will they like it? How will I cope when the inevitable criticism hits the fan? Because of the content, which is about how my daughter and I coped with her being gay, I face the possibility of homophobic and/ or Orthodox Jewish criticism in addition to the literary variety. Hopefully I will cope. It helps to know that my memoir has been infused with positive vibes from Lindsay, and that she will be right there in spirit urging our new baby on.
